The urban area is drained by the Lippe. The Hambach, Wienbach and Schölzbach streams flow into it. The largest lake is the Blaue See in the east of the Holsterhausen district, which borders directly on the Marienviertel in the west of Hervest. Especially in the northern districts such as Lembeck and Rhade, the landscape is characterized by pastureland and fields. In the more southerly districts - especially in Hervest - industry and mining played an important role. The economic and cultural center is the old town south of the Lippe and the Wesel-Datteln Canal.
