Object description

42,680 inhabitants live in the town of Halberstadt and its districts, which are characterized by a very special atmosphere - old and modern, contemplative and exciting, quiet and yet always on the move. The town owes its early importance in central Germany since the beginning of the 9th century to the seat of the bishops of Halberstadt. They resided here for more than eight centuries. It is known for its medieval cathedral and St. Martin's Church, as well as for Halberstadt sausages from the former Heine company, which was the first to pack them in a tin. Halberstadt is also known as the "Gateway to the Harz". It is also internationally renowned for the fact that the composition ORGAN/ASLSP (ASLSP stands for "As Slow as Possible") by John Cage has been performed there for over 639 years, making it the longest lasting piece of music in the world. Halberstadt is an important business location in the northern Harz region. In addition to expertise in the fields of medical technology, mechanical engineering, wood processing and the food industry, the town has a strong service sector. More than 10,000 people travel to the district town of Halberstadt to work. The town's importance as a commercial and shopping center is also part of the business location. The Rathauspassage with its diverse range of stores, the surrounding shopping streets and the stores in the old town offer a varied shopping experience. Halberstadt is also an important cultural and leisure location. Lovers of drama, ballet, opera and symphony concerts get their money's worth at the Nordharzer Städtebundtheater. The zoo is located in the "Spiegelsberge" recreational area on the southern edge of the city. The new leisure and sports center and the modern stadium offer a wide range of sports facilities. A cinema complex with seven screens, which has been integrated into a former sugar factory, shows the latest films.
