SENIOR-FRIENDLY LIVING: ZUHAUSE IM GRÜNEN

For more living comfort in old age

Feel at home. That’s what Velero stands for. The maxim is also set to take hold in Wittstock/Dosse in Brandenburg: Without further ado, the property manager implemented a concept for senior-friendly living.

The conversion work began at the hottest time in 2020. The former commercial units in the “Rote Mühle” area were to undergo a major upgrade to make them even more attractive to a specific group of tenants in and around Wittstock. Velero had a plan: to enable senior-friendly living in the small town in Brandenburg for the first time.

Now, one year later, twelve low-barrier units have been created. The number of inquiries for the modernized rental apartments already exceeded expectations during the conversion phase. After all, age-appropriate properties are still a rarity in Wittstock.

Barrier-free living requires a rethink

Everything began with the aim of eliminating the vacancy of commercial premises in the “Rote Mühle” residential area. Velero made a virtue out of necessity: the ground-floor commercial units met the requirements for an age-appropriate conversion.

The residential property manager has recognized the need for future-oriented living concepts. This is because demographic developments require new perspectives. True to the motto: Thinking about tomorrow today.

Without thresholds in the house, wide entrances and passageways and grab rails in the bathroom are among the requirements for barrier-free residential properties. In the “Rote Mühle” residential area, senior-friendly living is defined by other amenities.

The floor-to-ceiling window fronts have been retained in part as light-giving relics of the former stores. They give tenants a view of blossoming chestnut trees and lush meadows. From the outside, the windows are framed by a brick façade. The red bricks are a well-known motif from Wittstock’s picturesque city center. A park inside the residential quarter, which is laid out as a square, offers nearby recreation. Generous parking spaces are adjacent to the entrances. Short distances define the neighborhood and contribute to a comfortable living atmosphere for older residents.

“Rote Mühle” for families, senior citizens and singles

However, the residential complex offers attractive living space not only for senior citizens. 134 rental apartments are spread across four building complexes on up to five floors. Large and small families, as well as single households, will find lucrative living space in Wittstock via Velero at a rent of EUR 5.00 to EUR 6.50 per square meter.

The proximity to the historic town center, shopping facilities, educational institutions and medical care, as well as to the countryside, make living in Wittstock family- and senior-friendly.

Since Velero took over the “Rote Mühle” residential area with a total of 134 units in 2017, vacancies around Beethovenstrasse have become a thing of the past.

The real estate manager, which has around 10,000 residential and commercial units nationwide, has repeatedly demonstrated its expertise in Wittstock: The expansion and conversion of outdated commercial units into modern apartments with low barriers has met with great tenant interest – even from the immediate neighborhood.
